Volunteer, Contribute, Advocate

You can be part of the Save Lives Movement in many other ways beyond donating blood - volunteer at a bloodbank, contribute to community drives, or advocate for the cause.

General Eligibility Criteria

To donate blood, you must:

  • Be in general good health.
  • Not have had any symptoms of infection e.g. sore throat, cough, runny nose or diarrhoea for at least 1 week.
  • Not have had a fever in the last 4 weeks.
  • Not have taken antibiotics for the last 7 days. If you have taken antibiotics, wait at least 1 week from the last dose.
  • Weigh at least 45 kg.
  • Have a haemoglobin level of at least 13.0 g/dl for males and 12.5 g/dl for females.
  • It may be harmful to you or the recipients if you donate blood when you are not eligible to do so.

If you travelled overseas in the last 4 months, kindly read up on on HSA’s advisory on donating blood after overseas travel.

Visiting or travelling to different regions of the world may make you ineligible to donate blood for a period of time. This is because some infections caught abroad can be transmitted through blood transfusion.

Important: You should not discontinue or stop taking medications prescribed or recommended by your physicians in order to donate blood.

Donation Process

The whole donation process takes an average of 45 minutes to complete:

  1. Form Filling (5 mins)
Complete the health assessment questionnaire to determine your eligibility for donation. It should be done in private, as it is a personal statement of your medical and social history.
  2. Registration (5 mins)
Your personal particulars will be recorded, and you will be placed in the queue.
  3. Haemoglobin Check (5 mins)
Your haemoglobin level will be measured by a fingerprick test to ensure that you can give blood. The minimum level required is 12.5g/dL for females and at least 13.0g/dL for males.
  4. Medical Screening (10-15 mins)
A medical screener will go through your health assessment questionnaire with you and measure your weight, pulse, blood pressure, and temperature to confirm you are fit for donation.
  5. Blood Donation (10-15 mins)
A nurse will attend to you to make sure you are comfortable before cleaning your arm and applying a local painkiller to ensure you feel minimal pain during the donation process. The actual withdrawal of blood takes about 5 to 10 minutes, and 350-450 ml of blood is collected.
  6. Rest and Refreshment (15 mins)
Light refreshments will be provided while you rest for 10-15 minutes. This is to ensure that you feel well before leaving the blood collection site.

Common Misconceptions about Blood Donation

Find Our Nearest Blood Banks

With our 5 bloodbanks and community blood drives located near your homes, workplaces, and MRT stations, donating blood has been made easier.

Organise a Blood Drive With Us!

There are two ways to organise a blood donation drive:

Group Booking at Bloodbank

Blood donation drives can be held at any bloodbank, islandwide. Let us know when and at which bloodbank you want to hold your blood drive. We can provide a chartered bus if there are at least 10 participants.

Mobile blood collection site at your premises

If you are hosting a big group of donors (140 or more), we can set up a mobile blood collection site on your premises. We require a clean, spacious room or hall with adequate lighting and ventilation that isn’t too noisy.

Before You Donate

How should I prepare for the blood donation? Should I fast or eat specific foods?

Please eat a light meal, drink plenty of water and have a good night’s rest before donation. No fasting is needed before blood donation. Should you feel unwell on the day of donation, take a rest and consider postponing the donation until you feel better. Avoid drinking tea or coffee and consuming calcium-rich foods (milk, cheese, yogurt) with iron-rich meals or iron supplements. Tannins in tea, caffeine in coffee and calcium reduce iron absorption. Have your coffee or tea after your meals.

Bring along

After Your Donation

  • Maintain an iron-rich diet following your donation to replenish the iron stocks in your body. You should also continue to hydrate yourself throughout the rest of the day.
  • You may resume your normal activities. Any strenuous or athletic activity should be postponed until the next day.
