Red Cross Memories: S. Velaisamy

I was working in the Navy when the Greek tanker Spyros exploded at Jurong Shipyard in October 1978.

Upon hearing it through the news, I ran forward to follow the footsteps of my brother – to donate blood. I was only 20 years old and I have donated blood more than 150 times over 34 years.

Blood can save lives. It’s something great to donate blood. Anyone can be a recipient, from infants to the elderly in their 70s. There is no barrier. I am fortunate to be healthy to donate blood to save lives. This is an inborn desire. I feel humbled by this experience. I am just trying to help someone.
