Nepal Earthquake: Singapore Red Cross Makes An Initial Contribution Of SGD 50,000 For Humanitarian Relief

Will launch public appeal

Singapore, 26 April 2015 – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) will be disbursing SGD 50,000 worth of relief items and emergency supplies in response to the earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday.

SRC will also be launching an urgent public appeal for the relief and recovery efforts in Nepal. The Singapore Government has contributed SGD 100,000 towards this appeal as seed money to further the efforts of SRC. Singapore Red Cross will release more details on the appeal and the various channels to donate soon. Members of the public who are willing to donate are encouraged to do so at Red Cross House, 15 Penang Lane, Singapore 236486, from 9am to 6pm on Mondays to Fridays.

Singapore Red Cross, is working with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on the Restoring Family Links (RFL) services. Family members who wish to contact their loved ones in the affected areas can register at http://familylinks.icrc.org/nepal-earthquake or call the Singapore Red Cross hotline at 6664 0501 from tomorrow (Monday 27 April).

Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General of SRC said: “We are deeply saddened by the great loss of lives and the immense scale of the devastation. According to our Red Cross responders on the ground, strong aftershocks continue to be felt adding to the risk of further damage to buildings, many are living in fear unable to return to their homes. Damage to roads and the airport means that getting relief and aid to these communities is also going to pose a great logistical challenge.”

“We are appealing to the Singapore public to help the affected people as they mourn their loss and begin to rebuild their lives. The Singapore Red Cross will channel the funds collected towards acute emergency relief and recovery assistance for the affected communities and the people who have lost homes and livelihoods,” he added.

The Red Cross Team on the ground, including Nepal Red Cross and International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has already mobilised emergency responders. The Red Cross Movement has activated its Regional Disaster Response Team (RDRT) and Field Assessment Coordination Teams (FACT). SRC is in constant contact with its Movement partners, closely monitoring the situation in affected areas, and plans to send disaster response personnel to the affected areas.
